The Changing Earth

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

We will be starting a new topic in grade 8 science once we get back to school. "The Changing Earth" is a very interesting topic and I am sure that everyone will enjoy it. It will be easier than chemistry, but equally interesting!

In this unit you will learn:

- About the different properties of Earth's Layers
- About the plates that make up Earth's outermost layers
- How the continental hypothesis was developed
- About evidence for the sea floor
- How scientists developed the theory of plate tectonics
- About different plate boundaries
- What happens when plates move apart
- What happens when two continental plates converge
- What happens when a oceanic plate converges with another plate
- What happens when one plate scrapes past another plate
- Why earthquakes occur
- Where most earthquakes occur
- How rocks move during earthquakes
- How seismic waves can be measured using seismographs
- How an earthquake's magnitude is related to the damage it causes
- How structures are built to withstand most earthquakes
- How scientists estimate the earthquake risk in an area (optional)
- How the folding of rock can form mountains
- How movements along faults can form mountains
- How volcanoes erupt
- Why are volcanoes active along plate boundaries
- How different kinds of fossils show traces of life from Earth's past
- How ice cores and tree rings reveal conditions and changes in the environment
- What the relative ages of rock layers reveal about Earth
- That Earth is always changing and has always changed in the past
- What makes a natural resource renewable or nonrenewable
- About benefits and costs of using fossil fuels
- How people use natural resources in modern life
- How conservation can help people to reduce waste and reuse natural resources
- How recycling can help people to recover and extend natural resources
- About the alternate sources of energy (solar, wind, geothermal)
